Tired of the Buzz? Drive Mosquitoes Away by Recycling Scrap Auto Tires

As many residents know, mosquitoes have become a big problem in the Pittsburgh City neighborhoods of Lawrenceville & Bloomfield.  Mosquito bites are an itchy nuisance and can transmit many diseases of man and domestic animals.

To control mosquitoes and reduce the potential for disease (West Nile virus, dog heartworm, Zika, etc.), the County Health Department has treated these neighborhoods with pesticide at least 2 or 3 times per season for the last 14 years. However, the best way to control mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding sites. Scrap automobile tires are an excellent breeding site.  The stagnant water in a single tire can produce thousands of mosquitoes in one season.

The Allegheny County Health Department is holding a One Day Tire Recycling effort for residents of Lawrenceville & Bloomfield.  On Saturday, October 15^th, 9AM to 5 PM, residents may bring scrap auto tires without rims to a collection point at the County Health Department’s Clack Office complex at the corner of Penn Ave & 39^th Street.  This is a free service, but is only good for ONE Day, Saturday, October 15^th, 2016.

In addition to removing scrap tires, we encourage residents to eliminate other water holding items on their property.
