Welcome to Lawrenceville’s 1st Pride!
June 17th, 2023, celebrate with LGBTQIA+, allied businesses, and creatives in Lawrenceville. The day will feature a series of different events and opportunities throughout Lawrenceville, as local businesses show their pride and their support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Lawrenceville is a place where many creative people and ideas come together. A neighborhood where all are welcome and a place where you can always run into a friend on Butler Street. Our LGBTQIA+ community is strong with residents, visitors, and business owners. It only made sense to organize the first neighborhood-wide Pride event when Sanctuary, a local business located at 3533 Butler Street, reached out saying, “let’s make this happen.”
Sanctuary has naturally become a community space for the neighborhood ever since opening their doors in 2020. It is a safe space in Pittsburgh where queer people can go to get tattooed and know their comfort and safety is centered in everything they do. There is a need for more people in the community to be strong allies all year round. The rapid spread of transphobic and anti LGBTQIA+ laws in states like Florida have made many people scared to celebrate Pride this year. Cities like Pittsburgh are generally accepting of queer people, but it is clear that being “tolerant” is not enough to protect people from laws that aim to force them back into the closet and ultimately deny their existence.
Lawrenceville Pride is designed to be an opportunity for the community of Lawrenceville to support local queer small businesses and the organizations that are on the ground every day, providing essential resources to our queer neighbors. Sanctuary has supported many queer charities and artists since opening, and has joined forces with us to strive towards an environment of safety and comfort for queer folks. We want to work together with other queer and allied business owners to make the event more impactful each year, and we hope there will be many more Lawrenceville Pride celebrations in the future!
We hope you will come out to have food, fun, and a beer or two, but also we want to emphasize that when June ends, we need everyone in the community to protect and support our neighbors. We appreciate the many local businesses that are supporting the event, and we can’t wait to see you all at Lawrenceville Pride 2023.
