Contemporary Craft & Sibyls Shrine Partner For Residency Program

Contemporary Craft (CC) and Sibyls Shrine, a nation-wide art collective and residency program dedicated to uplifting Black artists who m/other, are pleased to announce a new residency partnership for Sibyls Shrine’s network of artists. This new partnership kicks off on Tuesday July 16, with a month-long residency at CC by Amber Doe, a multidisciplinary artist from Tuscan, AZ, who was personally invited by Sibyls Shrine founder Alisha Wormsley.

The residency provides radical care, rest, and support, along with an honorarium; materials budget; exhibition opportunities; full access to Contemporary Craft’s studios, equipment, and tools; a semi-private studio space at CC; and private on-site storage for personal tools and equipment. Residents will also receive free tuition to any of Contemporary Craft’s scheduled workshops. In the first year, the program will host four residents from across the country, including Doe.

What sets this residency apart is the unparalleled care offered to each resident. Not only do they have access to all of the tools, equipment, and space needed for their artistic practice, but they also have the complete support of the Sibyl Shrine network. This support enables each resident to bring their children with them and thrive as an artist, mother, and person.

The partnership was inspired by Wormsley and her own experience as a resident at Contemporary Craft. After going through the program and seeing the benefits it afforded her and her artistic practice, Wormsley wanted to extend this resource to other artists who could benefit from the type of support a residency can provide. As CC’s artists-in-residence programs have grown over the past few years, this partnership was a natural fit.

“I have known Amber for over 25 years. We grew up together in our 20’s, artists in Brooklyn,” said Wormsley. “This trip is especially special because this is the first time Amber has traveled to an art residency with her daughter, Ruby. Amber has travelled all over the world for short residencies while Ruby stays with Amber’s mother. We are so excited for them to be on this side of the country, to support this extraordinary family and Amber’s practice in such a special way.”

In 2026, Wormsley and Doe’s work will be on view during a joint exhibition at Contemporary Craft. More details will be available mid-2025.

Amber Doe (b. Washington DC) currently lives and works in Tucson, AZ. She holds a BFA from Sarah Lawrence College and is a recent recipient of the Night Bloom Grant via MOCA Tucson and the Warhol Foundation. Additionally, she is a 2023 Projecting All Voices Arizona State University and Mellon Foundation Fellow. You can learn more about Amber here.
