Reimagining Magical Realism- A Look Beyond the Fantastic

When art critic Franz Roh applied the term magical realism to visual art in 1925, he was designating an artistic style, which brings an extreme to the depiction of mundane subjects, revealing an interior mystery. Recent magic realism exceeds mere overtones of the fantastic or surreal to depict the essence of magical reality, reflecting the uncertainty of everyday life. Many of the works in the exhibition connect to utopian–inspired tales emphasizing feminism, eco-feminism, black- feminism, “queer- feminism”, post -capitalist feminism, and social transformation.
