Lion Dance Summer Camp

At the suggestion of some parents, we are offering a week long summer camp this year revolving around lion dance for kids 6-12 and will be held at the school 11-15 July from 9am-4pm each day. This program will take a broad view of lion dance, touching upon many aspects of lion dance including ones we don’t often get to delve into much. While the specifics are not set yet, we plan to include:

– kung fu (probably twice daily)
– lion movements (ie dancing, stepping etc)
– dumming and music
– “third characters”, or the masked characters, such as the Willow Spirit character
– important stories from the culture that lion dances often reference
– physical aspects of lion, discussing the parts of a lion head and how they work
– lion construction, such as painting
– symbols used in lion dancing
– possibly we will touch upon dragon dancing as well

This may seem a little ambitious for a week long program, but some topics we will only touch lightly upon. This being the first year we offer this camp, the specifics are still being determined. Some may also depends upon the specific kids who attend the camp. As we progress, more details will be added to this post.

The cost will be $200 for the week per kid. We will require a minimum of 10 kids to hold the camp, and we will cap the number of kids at 20. Also, because the issue of food and food allergies and such gets complicated, we ask the kids bring their own snacks and lunch.

If you are interested in your kid attending this camp, please let us know ASAP. If there are not at least 10 kids, this camp will not be held. We will also not accept more than 20 kids. So it’s good to let us know as soon as you can by email to info@steel-dragon.org.
