Utility Work in Lawrenceville Meeting Recap (7/15/26)

On Wednesday, July 15th Lawrenceville Together gathered at Attack Theatre to host a conversation on the ongoing utility work in the neighborhood. Representatives from PWSA, Peoples Gas, PennDOT, DOMI as well as Councilwoman Deb Gross, Corey Buckner (Office of the Mayor), Senator Williams office were present.

Over 40 community members attended the meeting, with others joining us via livestream. After remarks and information from the utility companies, we opened the floor to questions and comments and received some valuable feedback and experiences from our neighbors.

Some folks wrote down their questions or comments for us to follow up and we are adding responses we received below. 

1. Who is responsible for repairing the sidewalks post-construction? There are streets where half the slabs are loose gravel and it is dangerous for pedestrians and difficult for those in wheelchairs to navigate over them.

• “For our construction projects, Peoples Gas contractors are responsible for replacing the sidewalk slabs that were disturbed during our replacement work. If there’s a specific street that the resident is concerned with, we’d be happy to send someone out to make sure it is safe, until that area is scheduled for repair.”

2. I received a ticket for parking in the construction zone at 8am when the sign said no parking began at 9am. I luckily caught the enforcer and showed them the sign and it was redacted, but many others received citations on the block before 9am. How can we ensure the police are aware of how to read the signs properly to enforce citations?

• “In most scenarios, police only enforce no parking signs if requested by the permit holder and in those cases they look for the car owners and/or tow the cars. DOMI holds regular coordination meetings with the Department of Public Safety. We plan to include no parking signs on an upcoming meeting agenda to ensure we are all on the same page regarding enforcement.”

3. We would like to request a full schedule of all street closures in as much advance as possible.

• We have passed this suggestion along to each utility company and will follow up with them to check on progress periodically.

4. The utility companies should be responsible for reaching out to every residence and business in the areas of their work whether they are a customer or not.
