Situate yourself at this rough urban gem, spend an afternoon diving into the fundamentals of solid picture-making, and strengthen your skills working with expert instructors Martha Ressler and Gail Beem to learn effective ways to approach Plein Air.

WHAT's THIS ABOUT?

The all-volunteer LESLIE Collective has been programming wildly popular events at empty LESLIE Park Pool for over 3 years—Accordion Pool Party, Urban Star Party, Disposal Film Festival, and more. We’re testing and demonstrating new uses for this CitiParks property, working with Pittsburgh officials and architecture students from Carnegie Mellon University to craft a master plan for the site.

This summer, the big event is “Project: Lido,” a curated, site-specific art installation featuring the work of 8 artists who exhibit locally and nationally. As part of the many free activities surrounding the lead-up to the opening of “Project: Lido,” the LESLIE Collective is sponsoring an Art Activity Day, full of free classes for adults and make-and-take activities for kids. The pool will thrum with activity…as well as quiet, unstructured moments throughout the afternoon.

As part of Art Activity Day, the LESLIE Collective is presenting a FREE PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOP in this inspiring space full of unusual infrastructure, greenery, artists-at-work installing their pieces, and other visual delights and challenges. We’re thrilled to welcome noted painters and teachers Martha Ressler and Gail Beem to present the class. Martha and Gail will share their knowledge of painting through group demonstration and by attending to the individual needs of each student. They’ll help you discover how to get your painting off to a solid start with choice of effective subject matter, proper perspective and compelling composition. You’ll learn or refine your skills with the mysteries of color and brushwork. Individual and group critiques will focus on student strengths and solutions to problems in a supportive spirit.
